Impossible means nothing to your Career Path

10 January 2024

Impossible is Just a Word, don’t let impossible hold back your career path dreams.

So you have come to that point, we all get to it, more than once in our lives, is this really what I want from my career? We have day dreamed of a being in a better place, as of yet we have done nothing to get us there…until now.

The problem many face at this point is not setting goals once they make a decision to realise their career dreams.  To coin the phrase Adidas are now adopting, “Impossible is nothing.”

You may feel, you can’t make a career change, because you don’t feel equipped, why can’t you? If we all thought with restrictions all of the time, nothing would happen, there would be no inventions, no innovations whatsoever.

Don’t allow your career dreams to fall by the way side, you are worth more than that, doesn’t your inquisitive mind deserve more?

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream. This is your career, make the most of it to self actualise YOU.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down your career goals. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ Add another list and call it ‘impossible for you to do.’

Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

As the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’

As you go through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. The impossible begin to seem possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that career goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic, always make your goal Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work and discipline. But take note that that 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one.

So keep dreaming and turn this to reality. Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. If you adopt what we have just discussed, you will step up the career ladder before you know.  The impossible will become possible.

If you wish to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

I had an amazing coaching experience that truly helped me gain a deeper understanding of my motivations, how my personality influences my interactions, thoughts and feelings and digging deep into who I am regardless of the environment I am in. The insights I gained during the sessions were invaluable. The coaching challenged me, provided much needed clarity, and set me on a path towards personal growth and achieving my goals. I recommend Emerson, he has a wealth of knowledge and deep understanding of what he does and is incredibly skilled at guiding you through self-discovery and helps you uncover aspects of yourself that you hadn’t fully realized before.

I worked with Emerson to gain clarity on my career goals and build greater understanding of next steps. He offers a personalized approach, not a set of structure activities, but tailored conversations and questioning that have left me feeling motivated. I have found the sessions thought provoking and seen a significant positive shift in myself, not only helping me to formalise my thoughts but also creating positive impact within my current role .

Emerson has been my coach for a number of years, both on a personal (inner confidence) level and on work matters. I went through a period of change when transitioning into a new role which I found extremely overwhelming. I was put in a position of increased responsibility in an area that I was not comfortable with and quite honestly did not think I was ready for. Emerson always saw through any negative thoughts I felt about myself. His guidance and coaching was instrumental in navigating me through this time where my lack of self-believe and self worth was taking centre stage and close to derailing the opportunities presented. Emerson was instrumental in turning my negative thoughts around which has shaped me into the person I am today; confident, appreciative of my abilities and recognising that my contributions are of value. Emerson is a fantastic listener (and very humble with it) and extremely empathetic. He has an uncanny ability to ask the right questions at the right time without being judgemental or disrespectful. I also engaged Emerson’s coaching services for my daughter. She found the sessions helpful at a cross road in her life, leaving her empowered to believe in herself and her decision making. Life waits for no-one. If you want to be your best self I whole-heartedly recommend Emerson’s coaching.

My company reached out to Emerson to assist me in transitioning into a senior leadership role within the business. I was apprehensive about the coaching at first as I felt it was unnecessary, however my mindset changed very quickly during our first session when Emerson explained and highlighted some key areas in which I could look to work on and improve, for example, work efficiency and procrastination, leadership and working with others to get the best out of individuals in your team along with both my own and the teams mental health and well-being. Emerson enabled me to set each session agenda important to me through some very clever techniques and in turn it felt like I was in control even though all sessions were fully collaborative. It didn’t feel forced, and actually felt very relaxed, comfortable and also fun. He provided detailed reports weekly showing our discussions along with analysis and what we would be working on for the week ahead. He is a great listener who offers fantastic insight into our discussions and challenges my opinions or thoughts when appropriate. I highly recommend Emerson to anyone. I feel more equipped in my role to handle our company and team goals due to the confidence I’ve gained from our sessions.
